Welcome Mr. Handsome!

So everyone, join hands with me. Choose your favorite flower and welcome Mr. handsome – Vasanta (Spring). He’s here! I’m so excited. This day is when the official Hindu year starts – called Yugâdi (commencement of a Yuga). It is this day that this Yuga (long mundane of years – consists of four, of which we’re living in the last Yuga; well I can’t go into detail as it’d take quite a number of posts, which I plan to do in my another blog – which is yet to be started).

This day is very auspicious for all Hindus – though not everyone in India celebrates it (which is sad). It is said that paying homage to Sun god and other chief gods today would keep you from all kinds of troubles throughout the year. This year is named Virodhî (the 25th year of Jupiter’s cycle of 60 years – again this might be just jargon from some of you as it requires quite a long explanation).

Virodhî means contradictory – though its name sounds terrifying, one should take its meaning as ‘opposing injustice and other wicked things.’ I plan to sow vegetables today as a token of welcoming Vasanta. I haven’t much time to speak a lot now, as I should be getting ready to office in 4 hours, which gives me just 3+ hours for sowing. Will keep you updated. Until then, I’ll let you guess what this flower could be…

Hail Vasanta!

What a pleasant post! Is that flower the adukku malli, multi-layered jasmine?

Happy gardening!

Chardramouli,
I've never heard of this plant before it has beautiful foliage. The flower must have a delightful aroma also?

I have always thought that it would make more sense to begin the new year with spring--the Hindu New Year is perfect! Sowing seeds today sounds like the perfect way to welcome in Vasanta.

Wednesday's post was beautiful--seeing the skies and the opening of your passionflower really puts me in a spring mood. I enjoy learning all these details about your culture as well.

Hail Vasanta! Enjoy your day sowing seeds! My guess is gardenia.

Happy new year! Thanks for all the info about Hinduism. And I would agree with Catherine, it looks like gardenia.

Hail Vasanta! It looks like Gandh Raj but the leaves look different.

Interesting post! Is that a jasmine -- the 'Grand Duke Of Tuscany', perhaps?

Will sure do, Tyra. As I said I'm planning to start another blog as I don't want to do both in the same blog as some might not find it interesting. Hope I start it by next week. Thank you. Have a great weekend too.

Thank you, Petra. The identity of the flower is revealed in the next post.

Frances: Great to see that many are interested in the culture and am sure gonna start the other blog soon. Thank you for your great comments :)

Tina: Hail, Hail! Thank you :)

Raji Muthukrishnan: It IS Adukku Malli, ma'am. Isn't she gorgeous?

Thank you, Randy and thank you for encouraging me to start the new blog. Hope it'll be up by next week.

Randy Emitt: The flower definitely has a wonderful scent. BTW, the foliage is not that of the flower. They're different plants. The foliage in the first photo is of an unknown plant and the second one is Hollyhock. In fact I never put them there to confuse to to show the arrival of Vasanta with the new sprouts. Glad that it served as a confusing parameter ;)

Thank you, Catherine. I so want to grow Gardenia, but its identity is revealed in the next post. Check it out. BTW, can Gardenia be grown in pot? The woman at nursery told me it grows like a huge shrub so am not sure if I should buy it.

Gisele: Thank you :) Glad you liked the post. Its identity is revealed in the next post. Check it out.

MarionL: Happy Vasanta to you too! Thank you for the blessings. My wishes go all the way to Louisiana too. Have a nice weekend.

Kanak: Not sure of the English name of Gandh Raj. The flower's identity is revealed in the next post. Check it out. BTW, as I said, the foliage is not that of the flower.

Morning Glories in Round Rock : Its aroma is very sweet, yes. The flower's identity is revealed in the next post. Check it out.

My pleasure, Racquel. Hail Vasanta!

Thank you :). You guessed it right, Shailaja. Congrats!

It's funny that you call spring Mr. Handsome. Spring is always a lady here, but winter is a man!

True. Flora - is a goddess of Flowers and Spring in Roman Mythology, Idun (goddess) in the Norse Mythology, Persephone in case of Greek... and so on, but somehow Brahma (the creator) made Vasanta a male. Winter, Dewy season, Spring, Summer are masculine, whereas Fall and Rainy season are feminine.
